Original Software Guides
Several of the biology courses I have taught also equip students with practical computational skills for handling and reporting data. After noticing the huge variety in digital literacy that students bring with them to the classroom, I decided to create step-by-step guides to get everyone on the same page before class. My students were not only less frustrated with the computer tasks after using these guides, but they were also able to ask more in-depth questions about the scientific concepts once they mastered the basics of Excel or Python.
BIOL 1001 Human Biology
This course required students to plot a line graph of their lab-collected data on cellular respiration rates in yeast. The following document walked students through this process in Excel 2010 on a Windows computer (the most commonly available option on campus).

BIOL 3244 Experimental Marine Biology
In this intense summer course, students had to collect their own data in lab, analyze it statistically in Excel, and report their data in properly labeled graphs to include it in publication-style lab reports. They learned many scientific skills within a few weeks, so I made a few guides for performing t-tests and ANOVAs to take some of the headache out of mastering research! Since there were a lot of Mac users in this course, I created versions of each guide for both PC and Mac so the screenshots and procedures were accurate for all operating systems.

BIOL 8250 Programming for Biologists
This graduate-level seminar was designed to introduce students to addressing biological questions and handling biological data using Python. It required no previous programming experience, so I created several tutorials to introduce students to the absolute basics of Python. I concentrated on the information they needed to get started and pointing out terms or topics they would not be able to search for online without prior background.
